About Ryan

Ryan Thompson serves as the Interim Executive Director of Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) at the University of Texas at Austin, where he provides strategic leadership for the university’s utility systems. With over 30 years of experience in power generation across nuclear and fossil fuel plants, Ryan brings deep expertise in campus district energy systems.

During his 26 years with the University, he has held multiple leadership roles, including Maintenance Mechanic, Associate Director of Power Plant and Chilling Stations, and most recently, Director of Utilities. Throughout his tenure, he has been instrumental in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of UT’s energy infrastructure. He played a key role in bringing the UT WaterHub® to fruition and continues to drive UEM’s mission forward through the oversight of critical energy assets, large-scale capital projects, and the implementation of UEM design guidelines and standards across UT System and campus projects.

As Interim Executive Director, Ryan works closely with campus stakeholders, Capital Planning and Construction (CPC), and the City of Austin to align utility services with the university’s long-term growth and sustainability goals.
