About Roberto
Roberto del Real is the Director of Utilities for Distribution at UT Austin’s Utilities and Energy Management (UEM). He has worked for the university for eighteen years and has served in various capacities during his tenure at UEM. At UEM, he has served as the Plant Operations Maintenance Manager, Controls Systems Manager, Associate Director of Energy Management and Optimization, and now as Director of Utilities.
Trained as an engineer, he has a unique 30-year background in leadership, engineering, and project management on multimillion-dollar projects, strategic planning, and operational optimization programs that have provided advantages and considerable benefits to the companies he has worked for.
Roberto has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso.

About Utilities Distribution
Utilities Distribution maintains and repairs all system components: transformers, switches, streetlights, sports lighting, breakers, and associated equipment. Utilities Distribution also services emergency standby electrical systems, protective devices and controls, revenue metering and monitoring. Additionally, this team provides oversight of the exterior electrical distribution system for the university’s main campus, off-campus student housing, Pickle Research Campus and Whitaker Fields. The electrical distribution network includes all of the equipment from the Power Plant or incoming power supply to each building’s main power switchgear. Utilities Distribution also provides and reviews specifications for both modernization and new construction projects.
This team operates and maintains a network of distribution piping, valves, meters and other components to provide the following services:
- potable, irrigation, reclaimed, and deionized water
- steam
- natural gas
- compressed air as well as a network of recovered water
- wastewater and stormwater collection systems
