Ryan Thompson leads Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) at The University of Texas at Austin, providing strategic direction for the campus’s energy generation, distribution, and infrastructure. His work ensures that UT Austin operates reliably today while building a sustainable energy future for tomorrow.
With more than 25 years at UT Austin and over 30 years of experience in power generation — including nuclear and fossil fuel facilities — Ryan brings deep technical expertise and a steadfast commitment to operational excellence. He has held multiple leadership roles within UEM, including Director of Utilities and Associate Director of Power Plant and Chilling Stations.
Ryan has played a pivotal role in advancing campus energy reliability and sustainability. He helped develop the UT WaterHub® and continues to guide major capital projects, energy initiatives, and utility design standards that shape UT Austin’s energy landscape. Through close collaboration with campus partners, Capital Planning and Construction, and the City of Austin, he ensures UEM’s work aligns with the university’s mission and sustainability goals.
