Xavier Rivera Marzán - Executive Director
About Xavier
Xavier Rivera Marzán is the Executive Director of The University of Texas at Austin’s Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) department. He has led UEM since May 2022 where he champions sustainable and scalable solutions for the campus and is responsible for more than 200 staff across five divisions: Operations, Electrical Distribution & Elevator Services, Mechanical Distribution, Energy Management & Strategic Programs, and Support Service.
Before UEM, he served as Executive Director of Utilities and Energy Management at the University of Kentucky, where he spearheaded the development and implementation of a utility master plan and the design and construction of a new cogeneration, high-pressure steam, thermal storage, and chilled water plant to support a new medical district. He has more than 25 years of experience leading utilities and energy management organizations.
His passion for thinking holistically about energy solutions has provided him with opportunities to work with local organizations, as well as political leaders deciding energy policy and investments at the national and international levels. He is a problem solver who looks at opportunities from a financial, technical, and social impact perspective.
As a consultant, Xavier has advised senior political figures across Central and South America and designed policies and programs in El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Designing and building effective energy infrastructure requires a comprehensive approach that considers technical requirements, delivers a return on investment, aligns with the geo-political environment, positively affects society, and creates value for lower-income communities.
Xavier has a Master’s degree in Leadership from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology.
